About the Collection Mawa Design Gangkofner Edition

The light fixtures in the Gangkofner collection by Mawa Design are new editions of classical glass lights by Aloys Ferdinant Gangkofner. Each model has a unique glass shade, manufactured with demanding handicraft techniques. Today, the collection comprises the suspensions Bergamo, Bologna and Pisa, as well as the floor lamp Bologna.

Aloys Gangkofner (1920-2003) was one of the most significant German glass designer of the postwar period. A selection of his designs, made in the 1950s years for a serial production, are produced today by Mawa Design in a carefully modernised re-edition. For this purpose, the suspensions have a special suspension system with holders of transparent Makrolon, a very robust and break-proof synthetics with glass-like appearance. The glass diffusers seem to float freely in this way. Ceiling rose and suspension are made of powder-coated aluminium. The electrical cable with internal steel core is braided with fine polyester weaving.

The diffusers of triplex glass are carefully made by hand with the aid of various techniques. Each model has a different shape and other glass properties, however they have the same high quality and the perfect harmony between shape, colour and lighting effect. Each glass diffuser is a unique piece with unparalleled details and fine irregularities resulting from handicraft. Air inclusions, differences in the glass thickness and, if necessary, discrepancies in the surfaces' colour lend each light shade a character of its own and serve as quality feature.

The Bergamo suspensions have a bellied diffuser, open below. Depending on the version, they are of clear of smokey grey dyed glass or of matt opaline white flashed glass, each version producing another light effect.

The Bologna lights have instead bellied diffusers of opaline white flashed glass with matt surface and vertical grooved structure, so that a diffuse light is created. Here there is an opening below, enabling that some light shines directly downwards. The floor lamp has a metallic plate closing this aperture and a diffuser resting on a short-legged tripod base of powder-coated aluminium.

The diffuser of the Pisa suspensions is, on the contrary, slender and features a vertical grooved structure that ensures a noble light diffraction with the clear and smokey grey version, and also subtly upgrades the matt white version.

The suspensions of the Mawa Gangkofner collection offer a wide range of versions with which individual lighting concepts can be created. The modular conceived suspension make possible to select cable colour and metallic surface from several noble options, on request. On request, the light features are available also for Casambi control.

Important: the suspensions cable of the Gangkofner Edition have a standard lengths of 2,5 meters (without glass). On request, the cable of the desired length can be shortened. Special lengths of over 2,5 meters are also possible on request. When ordering, you must indicate the desired total length from the lower edge of the ceiling to the light glass lower edge.
