About the Collection Mawa Design Braun-Feldweg

The Braun-Feldweg collection by Mawa Design comprises several light classics by the German industrial designer Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg. These are the suspensions Mondello and Havanna from the year 1959 and the wall lamps Britz in two sizes and two colours, designed in 1962.

As a designer, author and university teacher, Wilhelm Braun-Feldweg (1908-1998) influenced the design of the postwar era and contributed to the professionalisation of the design field. To his students, he taught a design philosophy that puts usefulness above artistic expression. The product's form should result from its function, the manufacturing process and the technological requirements.

In this sense, the Havanna and Mondello suspensions have an oval ball of opaline white triplex flashed glass. Shape and material enable an even light distribution in all the directions and, at the same time, convey an harmonious overall impression because it has a shape that is created in a natural way under the influence of gravity on a blown glass ball. Especially for suspensions, suspended from the ceiling, these drop-shaped ovals are the most logical diffuser form. Because the Mondello light has its glass diffuser featuring a shape deformed in the width, the oval, egg-shaped light body still conveys an impression of harmony, dynamic and elementary beauty. For a suspension for soft, diffuse general lighting, it is more than appropriate. The matt nickel-plated metallic cap reproduces the soft, fluid diffuser shape and seems to be part of the whole. Here are located the lamp socket, the transition for suspension and, depending on the model, a wire grid serving as a protection against the penetration of insects inside the glass body.

Also the Britz wall lamps have shapes and materials complying with the special function that their designer had in mind. This time, it is a decorative light ball on the wall that can vary between downlight, uplight and illumination in both directions with one simple movement. This is achieved with an opaque front plate of aluminium and triangular sides, affixed to the casing at two points. If the plate stands parallel to the wall, the light passes upwards and downwards. When tilted upwards or downwards, one of both apertures is closed and the light is guided in one direction only. With simple means, Britz achieves a flexible variation between three different illumination modes. The lamps are standard E14 lamps.

All Braun-Feldweg lights convince with a great functionality and an absolute timelessness. Thanks to elementary shapes, neutral colours and sturdy materials, selected for their adequacy for given lighting tasks, the light fixtures adapt to every surroundings and integrate in the most various furnishing styles, ranging from modern minimalism to dignified Mid-Century style and classical high-class interiors.
